Colicky infants and Chiropractic Care

Colic, the fear of every new parent. Before birth, we know to expect dirty diapers, sleepless nights and crying.  But how much? And when does the crying turn from normal newborn behavior to colic?  When does the "normal" version of sleepless nights and crying turn into intolerable, and what can be done about it?

Parents want relief from the crying and sleep, but we are cautious about manual treatments on our tiny babies.  Luckily, chiropractors give an extremely gentle treatment to infants, and yet is very effective.  A study in 1999 in Denmark found that children who had been diagnosed by nurses as having full-blown colic "found that the reduction in crying was clearly within the first 14 days," and that "spinal manipulation is effective in relieving infantile colic."  What a relief!  Apparently, in Denmark it is quite common to bring newborns to the chiropractor, since "babies made up most of the Danish chiropractic patients younger than 18 years." (Hestbaek, 2009)

When it comes to colic, according to Pinyerd in 1989, "a commonly held belief is that the condition is benign and only results in transient loss of parental sleep; however, a detailed study of the recent literature and clinical studies suggests that not all colic abates without residual consequences."  But it is logical that even the most loving and patient parents can become frustrated with a baby who doesn't seem to respond to any sort of comforting.  In 2009 a study was completed on the long-term effects of colic, and they said "untreated post-colicky infants demonstrated negative behavioral patterns at 2 to 3 years of age. In this study, parents of infants treated with chiropractic care for excessive crying did not report as many difficult behavioral and sleep patterns of their toddlers. These findings suggest that chiropractic care for infants with colic may have an effect on long-term sequelae (complications)."  That study also concluded with the quote, "toddlers who were treated with chiropractic care for colic were twice as likely to not experience long-term sequelae of infant colic, such as temper tantrums and frequent nocturnal waking."
