Children and Chiropractic care

We want the best for our children.  We want them to be happy and healthy, to feel safe and be free to experience a positive childhood.  So when a child complains of pain we respond with sympathy and empathy, kiss or blow on "owies," and hope that a band-aid will suffice.  But sometimes their pain consistently recurrs, and we know that use or overuse of children's strength pain medication is unwise.  Chiropractic is an excellent, drug-free, effective alternative to simply numbing the pain--and can remove the source of the pain as well as stimulate overall wellness.  We know that the patterns we set for health in childhood  influences health later in life, and chiropractors "bring forward evidence-based strategies for prevention of spinal pain and other musculoskeletal problems." (Hartvigsen, 2009)

In 2009 it was said that "chiropractic is the most popular form of practitioner-based complementary and alternative medicine therapies for children," (Alcantara) and it is easy to see why.  When we come to the initial appointment, the chiropractor asks questions about when and how the pain first started, and then does a thorough examination by asking the child to bend in specific ways, touching the spine and feeling for stiff muscles, all before any treatment begins.  Then, while explaining what he or she is about to do, the chiropractor carefully and gently manipulates the spine to put things in place.  This can have an immediate effect.  In Explore, a magazine of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, one study "indicated a high rate of improvement with respect to the children's presenting complaints, in addition to salutary (promoting health) effects unrelated to the children's initial clinical presentations."

What are the causes of Children`s pain?
Sometimes the way we move or sleep might be the causes og children`s pain. But according to a study in 2003, "47% attributing onset (of pain) to a traumatic event, most commonly sports-related."  Accidents happen, as everyone knows.  What seems from the outside view to be a simple fall can jarr the spine enough to cause pain.  Luckily, that same 2003 study also said that "patients responded favorably to chiropractic management, and there were no reported complications."

The childhood we experienced is not the same as the ones our parents had.  This is the same for children today.  Simply by looking at the rise in average childhood weight we can see that children are more sedentary today versus 15 years ago.  A Finnish study in 2002 correlates "pain in the neck, shoulder, and lower back is becoming more common in Finnish adolescents" while "86% of 12-18 year olds use the internet, 27% daily, and 93% used computer and console games, 54% daily."  Computers, tv, and handheld devices combined with mental concentration lead to sitting in the same position for long periods of time.  At the same time repetitive movements with the keyboard and the mouse cause problems.  It's not only adults who sit in front of computers all day who need to be reminded to get up and walk around!  The Finns even learned that this is a growing problem.  "Pain of the neck and shoulder and pain of the lower back was much more common in 1999 than in 1991 and in 2001 than in 1999."
